August 2025 proved to be a transitional month for the Indian automotive industry, as market sentiment remained cautious amid upcoming GST reforms and the approaching festive season. Heavy monsoon rains and related disruptions further impacted retail sales, reducing footfalls at dealerships across the country.
A total of 3,27,719 passenger vehicles were sold in August 2025, down from 3,54,273 units in August 2024, marking a 7.5% year-on-year decline. Most OEMs reported a drop in sales, with the exceptions being Toyota, MG, and Skoda, which posted growth of 2.5%, 43.9%, and 79.3%, respectively.
In the SUV segment, the Hyundai Creta continued to lead the charts, recording 15,924 units sold, slightly down from 16,762 units last year, a 5% decline. Meanwhile, the Tata Nexon climbed to the second spot with 14,004 units, overtaking the Maruti Brezza and showcasing its growing popularity among Indian buyers.
