CNG cars have overtaken diesel, and EVs are now leading hybrids

India’s passenger vehicle market is experiencing a significant shift, with alternative fuels challenging the long-standing dominance of conventional options. While petrol still holds the largest market share, CNG has, for the first time, surpassed diesel in sales. The gap between electric vehicles (EVs) and hybrids has also narrowed, signaling a clear change in consumer preferences toward more sustainable mobility solutions.

Here’s a breakdown of how key players performed in this evolving market.

Maruti Suzuki

With the country’s most extensive CNG lineup, Maruti Suzuki accounts for 70.5% of all CNG car sales in India. The company sold 591,730 CNG cars in FY2025, driven by demand from both fleet and private buyers who value their high fuel efficiency and low cost of ownership. The automaker also sold 1,148,363 petrol models and 20,672 hybrids.

Hyundai Motor India

Hyundai continues to offer a mix of petrol, diesel, and select CNG models. In FY2025, the company sold 408,242 petrol cars, 107,187 diesel, 79,267 CNG, and 3,970 EVs. To stay competitive, Hyundai plans to introduce new mass-market electric and hybrid vehicles soon.

Tata Motors

Despite having a diverse portfolio of petrol, diesel, CNG, and EV models, Tata Motors saw a decline in sales across all segments during the last fiscal year.

Mahindra & Mahindra

Mahindra is enjoying strong success, outperforming both Hyundai and Tata in several months. The company secured a 55% market share in diesel and over an 11% share in the EV segment in FY2025.

Toyota Kirloskar Motor

Toyota remains the leader in the hybrid market, holding a dominant 79% market share. Their success is largely attributed to popular models like the Urban Cruiser Hyryder and the Innova Hycross.

Kia India

Kia has established itself as the second-largest manufacturer of diesel vehicles, trailing only Mahindra & Mahindra.

JSW MG Motor India

Majorly reliant on its electric models like the Windsor EV and Comet EV, JSW MG Motor India outperformed Tata Motors in the EV space, a segment previously dominated by Tata’s Nexon EV and Punch EV.
