Hybrid Vehicles Gain Momentum in India
According to the latest fuel-mix report for FY2025, there’s a notable shift in the Indian automotive market. While petrol vehicles continue to dominate, CNG has surpassed diesel sales, and hybrid vehicles are rapidly closing the gap with electric vehicles. This growing demand has prompted several major automakers to accelerate their plans for new hybrid models.
Leading manufacturers like Maruti Suzuki, Mahindra, Renault, Honda, and Nissan are all preparing to launch new hybrid cars and SUVs by the end of 2026. This move reflects a broader industry trend toward more sustainable and fuel-efficient options.
Upcoming Hybrid Models by 2026
Here’s a look at some of the most anticipated hybrid vehicles set to hit the market:
Maruti Suzuki’s Hybrid Strategy
As India’s largest automaker, Maruti Suzuki is at the forefront of this hybrid push. Their new hybrid lineup will begin with the Maruti Victoris, a midsize SUV expected to arrive by Diwali 2025. This model will use the same 116hp, 1.5L strong-hybrid powertrain found in the Grand Vitara, and with a claimed mileage of 28.65 kmpl, it is poised to be one of the most fuel-efficient cars in the country.
Following the Victoris, Maruti plans to introduce the Fronx hybrid, a new-generation Baleno hybrid, and a hybrid mini MPV. These three models will feature a new, in-house-developed strong-hybrid system paired with the brand’s 1.2L Z-Series petrol engine.
Mahindra and Honda Join the Hybrid Race
- Mahindra XUV 3XO Hybrid: Codenamed S226, Mahindra’s first-ever hybrid vehicle is set to launch in 2026. This XUV 3XO variant will be powered by a 1.2L turbo-petrol engine and will likely sport a “Hybrid” badge and a dedicated instrument cluster interface.
- Honda Elevate Hybrid: Responding to market demand, Honda Cars India will introduce a hybrid version of the Elevate SUV by Diwali 2026. It’s expected to feature the City e:HEV’s 1.5L Atkinson Cycle petrol engine, allowing it to compete directly with the Maruti Grand Vitara and Toyota Hyryder.
Renault and Nissan’s Shared Hybrid Future
- Renault Duster Hybrid: The Duster is scheduled to return to India in early 2026 with a complete redesign and new hybrid powertrain options. The hybrid version will launch approximately six months after the standard petrol model. Globally, the Duster (sold as the Dacia Duster) uses a 140hp, 1.6L petrol-hybrid system.
- Nissan C-Segment SUV: Nissan India has confirmed plans for two new SUVs, which will be rebadged versions of the upcoming Renault Duster and a seven-seater called the Boreal. The Nissan Duster variant will feature a distinct design and more features than its Renault counterpart, while sharing the same engine options.
